What is Nonprofit Mail?

Nonprofit Mail is printed material eligible to be mailed as USPS Marketing Mail by organizations authorized by the Postal Service to mail at significantly reduced nonprofit postage rates. Nonprofit mail cannot contain matter that is required to be mailed as First-Class Mail. For example, handwritten or typewritten matter, or bills and statements of account, are required to be mailed as First-Class Mail.

Application Process

Step 1.

Complete PS Form 3624 - Application to Mail at Nonprofit USPS Marketing Mail Prices, available on USPS.com .

Step 2.

You will need to provide evidence that the organization is Nonprofit. Acceptable evidence includes:

An Internal Revenue Service (IRS) letter of exemption from payment of federal income tax.
If an IRS exemption letter is not available, a complete financial statement from an independent auditor (such as a certified public accountant) substantiating that the organization is nonprofit. A statement from a member of the organization is not sufficient (do not submit State tax exemption information).

Step 3.

You will need to provide documents describing the organization's primary purpose, such as:

Organizing instruments that state the purpose for which the group is organized, such as the constitution, articles of incorporation, articles of association, or trust indenture. The organizing instrument, including all amendments to the original, should bear the seal, certification, or signature of the Secretary of State or other appropriate state official. If one or more of these documents are not sealed, certified, or signed by state officials, an officer or other person authorized to sign for the applicant should submit a written declaration certifying that the documents are complete and accurate copies of the originals.
Materials showing how the organization actually operated during the previous 6 to 12 months and how it will operate in the future. Bulletins, financial statements, membership forms, publications produced by the organization, minutes of meetings, or a list of its activities may be used.

Step 4.

The application must be signed by someone in authority in the organization, such as the president or treasurer. It must not be signed by a printer or mailing agent.

Step 5.

What's involved?

1. Confirming your identity

2. Create a disclaimer

3. Assign who is responsible for managing the page

4. (Optional) Add a Facebook admin partner

IMPORTANT: These are the key procedures that, if not done, will crash a political or social Facebook ad campaign BEFORE it launches. Please allow yourself ample amount of time to complete these procedures before trying to run any ads about social issues, elections or politics.

1. Confirm your identity

A user on the Facebook Business Page must confirm their identity inside of Facebook. This authorization will allow the page to run Social/Political ads.

In order to confirm the user’s identity, the user must:

enable Two-Factor Authentication (cellphone number)
submit their Personal ID (driver’s license or passport)
enter a unique code sent to their address on a piece of mail (this code will take 3-5 business days to arrive)

You may begin this step by visiting Facebook and click on ‘ Get Started ’

Once these steps are completed, you can proceed with creating the disclaimer (step 2).

2. Create a disclaimer

You can now create a disclaimer on behalf of the Business Page. The purpose of this disclaimer is to provide the end-user with the transparency of who paid for the ad. This will appear underneath the Facebook Business Page name when the ad is serving.

Example:

1. Go to the page's settings and select the Issue, Electoral or Political Ads tab on the left (or visit Facebook )

2. Click on the ‘Create a disclaimer’ button

3. There are (4) disclaimer options for them to choose from. Select the best one that fits your organization and follow the prompts.

IMPORTANT: The website domain must match the organization email. (myorganization.com / name@myorganization.com )

4. Once you submit the disclaimer, it will take up to 24 hours to be approved.

3. Assign who is responsible for the page

Next, you will need to select one of your verified organizations or disclaimers to claim responsibility for the page.

4. (Optional) Add Facebook admin partner

The Inside Scoop: Making Sense of CASS and NCOA Data

Hello! Today we are going to discuss some mailing terms, what they mean, and why you need them. If any of you have ever done a bulk mailing you have probably heard the terms CASS and NCOA. You need both, and they both serve a great purpose to help save money and get your mail to the right destination.

Let's examine CASS first. CASS stands for Coding Accuracy Support System and is a program developed by the United States Postal Service (USPS) to improve the accuracy of mailings. What does this mean? Well, let us look at the main points of CASS:

Standardization

CASS cleans and standardizes address records, meaning it looks at your inputted address and corrects common misspellings, city names, and ZIP codes. So, if you input Raod, it corrects it to Road. CASS will use a valid Zip Code to update the City and State or use the valid City/State to update a missing Zip Code. It will however use the Zip Code first (so if it is wrong, the address could come back as undeliverable since it may not have a street in that Zip Code) As example, if you enter an address from Chicago and enter a Zip Code from California, it will use the California Zip Code, update the city/state, then look for a deliverable address there.

Address updates (LACS)

LACS (Locatable Address Conversion System) updates outdated addresses and checks against a database maintained by 911 Emergency Services. This database is being constantly updated as addresses are nationally standardized. This verifies the location can be found in case of emergency services are needed and keeps track of addresses which are updated (for example, a new home is built on an established street).

Delivery point validation

DPV is another step to verify the address given. This step compares the address to another database to see if the address exists, checking to see if the City has a Street named correctly, then verifies the number falls within the address range for that street. Consider Main St has and address range of 1-45. If you upload 55 Main St, it would return an invalid DPV. if it's 35 Main St it would return valid. Depending on the service used for CASS, you may get a valid response for a building/home that does not exist (35 Main St is not there).

Now that CASS has been completed you can review the invalid addresses and try to correct these (keep in mind you may be trying to send to an address that is refusing mail. For example, a manufacturing facility and it's office building. Mail may be refused at the actual manufacturing plant and only go to the office building even though the address is correct.

Once the CASS process is completed, NCOA would be performed.

NCOA stands for National Change Of Address and is maintained by the USPS. This database contains records of all COA (Change Of Address) forms filed with the USPS. This process is required by USPS for any bulk mail being submitted. A NCOA process on a mailing list is valid for 90 days, but it's always a good idea to try and run NCOA within about 2 weeks prior to mailing in order to reduce the number of forwarded mail.

Parallel vs Combination

When deciding on a paper fold to choose, the easiest way to narrow down your selection is to differentiate between parallel folds and combination folds.

A parallel fold is paper that is divided parallel to each other, or as you were taught in school, “hotdog style.” This type of fold usually runs vertically down the paper and includes half folds, double parallel folds, roll folds, accordion folds, and Z-folds.

A combination fold or right angle fold, is a combination of parallel folds that are folded once again, horizontally in half, like a “hotdog” folded into “hamburger style.” Combination folds include, but are not limited to, french folds, Z half folds, and Tri half folds. Each change of direction means an additional right angle, for up to four right angle folds (which would be a 32 pager).

Fan Favorite Folds

Once the folds are broken up between parallel and combination folds, there are countless options and varieties of folds within the two categories.

Parallel Folds:

Half folds, also known as 4-page folds, bi-folds, or single folds, are one of the simplest and most common folds for paper. These can be used for greeting cards, invitations, menus, or brochures. It makes one fold and allows for four panels to be printed on.

Tri folds, also known as letter folds, C folds or Z-folds, are similar to half folds and just as popular. They can be used for letters, pamphlets, flyers, and can easily be placed in an envelope. There are two folds which create 3 panels. A Z-Fold, is the simplest type of accordion fold, but more panels can be added to make a 4, 5, or even 6+ accordion fold. Brochure.

Combination Folds:

The french fold also known as a right angle, or quarter fold is one of the most popular combination folds usually used for newsletters or mailers to achieve the better postage rate. They also use two folds but create 8 panels.

Signature folds are one of the most important folds in commercial printing. Some common signature folds include 8, 12, 16, or 32 pages which are combined together to make catalogs.

Whether the client wants a stitched book, perfect bound, or even a spiral bound booklet, using signatures speeds up the collating process to combine those individual forms to make larger page count booklets.

Funkiest Folds

One of the most interesting and fun parallel folds is the gate fold. With this style, the two ends of the paper are folded inward where they meet in the middle. The “folded in” pieces can also be folded again towards each other to achieve a closed or double gate fold. Double gate folds are a creative way to reveal your products inside a brochure.

An example of a funky combination fold is a 16 panel fold or what some may call a “Map Fold”. This style is a combination fold which is folded in any number of ways to ultimately have 16 spaces to print information on. They are commonly used for maps, step-by-step instructions or sports schedules.

It’s a Colorful World! A Review of RGB, CMYK, Pantone

Introduction

Almost everyone learns about ROYGBIV: Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. These colors make up the rainbow. People also learn about primary colors and how they mix to create secondary colors. This specific color model, as we know it, is not completely accurate to the graphic design and printing world. Although some concepts are the same, knowing the other color models and when to use them can help you produce a better result.

RGB

RGB stands for red, green, and blue. It is most commonly used digitally, and it involves emitted light. Think of a computer monitor– it's glowing! Because it is emitted light, RGB is an additive color palette, meaning the more of each color you add, the brighter it becomes.

Each color can go up to a maximum light level of 255. So, if every color is at 255, then white is displayed. But, if only red is at a value of 255, a vibrant red would show since no green or blue light is emitted.

You might wonder how you get colors like yellow, orange, or purple from this range of colors. Yellow is created by adding red and green. But, the less green you add to red, the more orangey the color becomes. However, red and blue no longer make purple but instead create magenta. If you want something closer to purple or indigo, you want a lower value of red. Finally, if you mix green and blue at values of 255 each, you will get cyan.

The resulting color combinations might sound familiar. CMY, or cyan, magenta, and yellow, are the resulting mixtures of RGB. How do you get black? If you have no light or all values are 0, your color will be black! You can also get variations of gray by having red, green, and blue be at equal values. Of course, you can tweak those to get warmer or cooler tones.

CMYK

The CMYK color model represents cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. CMYK is most commonly used for printed materials. Digital and offset printers print in CMYK and layer on the different colors to create the most accurate result.

CMYK is a subtractive model, unlike RGB, so you would need to subtract all the ink to achieve white. Removing all the ink means not placing any of it down so that the original paper color appears.

CMYK inks can be mixed to create green, red, blue, purple, orange, etc. Cyan and magenta make the deep blue you might be used to seeing in a rainbow. The less cyan you add will cause the color to be more purple. Cyan and yellow make green, just as yellow and blue would. Magenta and yellow create red, but the less magenta used equals a more orangey hue.

If you add black to any of the colors, they become a darker, less saturated version. In contrast, adding less cyan, magenta, or yellow means you get a lighter color.

Pantone

When you think of a well-known brand, you probably make a few associations with it. For example, UPS is known for its brown branding, and Starbucks uses a particular green. It is a very specific shade of brown and a unique shade of green that can be consistently achieved using Pantone ink.

Because colors can significantly impact brand recognition, you can get sued if you are caught trying to use a claimed Pantone shade.

There are two different color systems that Pantone colors can fall into: PMS (Pantone Matching System) or FHI (Fashion, Home + Interior). PMS is what designers go for when picking colors for branding. PMS colors include a number and a C, M, or U, which refers to coated, matte, or uncoated colors. The system has thousands of colors to choose from.

PMS colors are spot colors, meaning they use premixed ink to be accurate and consistent. CMYK is a process color and instead lays down ink in layers. There are conversions between PMS, CMYK, and RGB, but the color results will differ slightly. Thus, digital printers cannot print perfect matches to Pantone colors. Only offset printing, which uses ink and not toner can print Pantone colors because you can load up that premixed ink.

If it will be going on a pole or is going to be double sided, we offer an 18 oz pole banner that is both weatherproof and extremely durable. If your banner will be staying inside, the 14 oz smooth banner should do the trick. We also offer a 13 oz scrim vinyl suitable for both indoors and outdoors. The 18 and 13 oz scrim vinyl has a rougher texture than the 14 oz smooth, which may influence your decision.

Regardless of choice, you have a range of finishing options from heat-welded hems, reinforced hems, grommets, pole pockets, and also wind slits for challenging outdoor applications.

Hanging the Banner

There are two potential solutions if you plan to hang up the banner where the wind is a concern. We have a mesh material option with many tiny holes that make it wind resistant. The material is less vibrant, but it is the best option for intense conditions outdoors. If less vibrancy is a deal breaker, we can put wind slits in other banner materials to help increase wind resistance.

There are multitudes of ways that banners can be displayed. We install grommets every two feet to provide flexibility when hanging with string or hooks. Pole pockets are also an option if you have a step and repeat banner. Additionally, we offer pop-up banners that velcro to the hardware and can be pulled up or collapsed. Size and Color

What about size and color limitations? At Vedda, there aren’t any limits on the sizes of banners we can make. While the rolls we print are capable of 10’ finished width, they can be as long as needed. Anything “too big” can be neatly sewn together with all edges reinforced and hemmed.

Colors can be important for marketing and branding. Because our banners are digitally printed, there are no color limitations or extra charges. You don't need to settle for a single-sided banner either, as we can print double-sided!

Exploring the Benefits of Direct-to-Film for Apparel and Merchandise Designs

Direct-to-Film (DTF) is a process that involves printing images or designs directly onto a film material. This technique is often used in the apparel printing industry so that we can print designs onto various surfaces. In this article, we will dive deeper into the Direct-to-Film printing process and explore the benefits it offers over other printing methods.

The Process

Direct-to-Film involves using a printer that is specially designed to print onto film materials. In our case, the Ricoh Ri 2000 printer is able to print both Direct-to-Film and Direct-to-Garment (DTG) .

For DTF prints, the biggest size film sheet that we can print on is 13x19 inches.

Once the design or image has been printed onto the film, it is then dipped into a pile of powder where it sticks to the ink. This is so once it is baked in our STS Inks Oven, it can easily adhere to any garment material when heat pressed. We then remove the film and press it once more to firmly make sure it is settled in place.

The Benefits

There are several benefits to using Direct-to-Film compared to Direct-to-Garment (DTG). One of which is that we can print a bulk of small designs per sheet of film in quick succession. If your business needs a logo to appear on the left chest of a polo or quarter-zip, we can have the design printed by the time the garments arrive. With DTG, we would need to wait until the apparel has been delivered to us before we could begin the printing process. Thus, DTF allows us to get a head start and have a quicker turnaround time.

DTF also allows for greater flexibility in the printing process. Designs can be easily adjusted or modified if necessary. If last-minute changes need to be made to the design, a new film can be printed quickly. Once a design is printed directly onto a garment with DTG, that print is final. Additionally, DTF provides more opportunities to adjust the placement of a graphic before it is pressed.

Sometimes with DTG, you may notice a tint or shade of where the pretreatment was sprayed on the apparel. However, Direct-to-Film avoids the need for any pretreat so you may wear your printed shirt proud right out of the box.

The printed designs for film also tend to last longer than DTG when washed and stretched. We also found through our testing that it often looks more vibrant on darker colored garments. With DTG, the garment material slightly soaks in the ink which causes the design to appear a little less vibrant.

With DTG, it is recommended that the apparel is made out of 100% cotton. But with DTF, there are very few limitations on what type of material the transfers look best on.

A Quick Guide About Direct to Garment Printing

If you’ve read Vedda’s article about our internship program, you know that we offer

Direct-to-Garment (DTG) and Direct-to-Film (DTF) printing options. DTG and DTF printing are different ways of getting graphics onto apparel, and in this post, we will be talking about Direct-to-Garment printing specifically.

As the name suggests, this type of printing makes it so that your art or graphic prints directly onto the garment. “But how long will it last?” you may ask. Those within the industry suggest that DTG prints can last to around 50 washes. However, we have special instructions that should help make your prints last longer. Here’s how:

Should be machine washed cold, inside out with like colors
Tumble dry low or hang to dry
Do not iron decoration
Do not dry clean

We recommend garments that are made with 100% cotton or a blend with over 80% cotton. This kind of material makes it easier to print at a high quality.

If you’re curious about the steps involved in the printing process, here are the main things you should know.

Pretreating

The area on the apparel that will have the image must be pretreated with a solution that provides a solid base for the graphic to sit on. Pretreatment is necessary because it makes images more vibrant by preventing the fabric from soaking up the ink and dulling colors. If you order for custom apparel from us, you may notice some slight discoloration in the fabric from where the pretreat was laid out. Don’t worry, this can easily be washed off as per the instructions above.

Heat Pressing

Next, the garment must be heat pressed to dry the pretreatment. We place parchment paper in between the garment and the heat press to prevent any burning from occurring.

Printing

After that is the fun part: printing the graphic onto the garment! The garment is secured onto an appropriately sized platen and sent inside the printer. The biggest size that we can print is 16x19 inches. At Vedda, the printer we use is a Ricoh Ri 2000, and you can see it in action on our TikTok video .

Drying

Once the graphic has been printed on the garment, we carefully lay it flat under a heat press to dry the ink. Your custom designed garment is then ready to be boxed and shipped.

Direct-to-Garment is an excellent choice for big and small orders. If you need one piece of apparel printed on, it can be done super efficiently. Alternatively, If you set up an online store for your business with Vedda Printing, new, one-off orders for merchandise that require DTG can be made quickly in-house. And, because garments are only being ordered and printed on as necessary, the process can help reduce waste and provide a more eco-friendly option.

Digital Vs Offset Printing

Digital and offset printing are two of the most common ways to print documents. Vedda Printing offers both as an option, but understanding how the different processes work, how they compare, and how to choose what to use can be essential for a cost-effective personal project or campaign.

Digital Printing

First, we’ll go over digital printing. If you are familiar with home printers, you are probably familiar with this technique. Digital printing utilizes inkjet or laser printers, both of which produce thousands of little dots to make up a final piece. It is swift, and virtually no drying time is needed once the ink is on the paper. At Vedda, some of the equipment used for digital printing includes the Canon ImagePRESS C10000VP, the Canon ImagePRESS C8000VP, the Canon ImagePRESS C750, and the Canon VarioPRINT 110. Offset Printing

Next, we will talk about offset printing. Offset printing has a “pre-press” setup, which consists of producing the plates with the documents on them. Offset printing uses an inking cylinder system with one cylinder dedicated to each color: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black. The plates from the prepress stage are wrapped around the cylinders and inked. The ink is then transferred to another cylinder which finally places the ink on the paper. Unlike digital printing, some drying time is needed for offset printing but also has many advantages. At Vedda, the equipment used for offset printing includes Heidelberg XL 75 5 Color w/aqueous coating tower 23x29, the Heidelberg CD 74 5 Color w/ aqueous coating tower 23x29, the Heidelberg Speedmaster 2-color 14x20, the Heidelberg Printmaster 2-color 12x18, and the Heidelberg KORS 24x36 2-color. How to Choose

So, which is the right choice? It depends on the job. Digital printing is generally considered faster and more cost effective for smaller quantities. It eliminates the prepress process found with offset printing. Another perk of Digital printing is that it is excellent for jobs that use variable data. Because it is computerized, it is easy to change names on letters for mailing campaigns and invitations, for example. However, digital printing does not have the same color accuracy and does not use Pantone colors unlike offset printing. For smaller quantities of items, it can get the job done efficiently and affordably.

Offset printing becomes quicker and more cost-effective once the quantity of prints needed hits a specific number. Additionally, offset printing offers Pantone colors which can be a vital part of branding. It is also considered to be of higher quality than digital printing. But, it is often not worth investing in offset printing if the quantity of copies is under 1000.

Tony Geraci: Project Manager

Tony is one of the most recent additions to the team at Vedda, joining the crew in September of 2022. Before, he was a team leader at Whole Foods and made an easy transition to a project manager at Vedda. He has had plenty of experience working with others and being a guide for assignments.

Tony starts off his duties as a project manager by communicating with a new client. He then enters any new jobs or projects into Vedda’s system and follows them throughout their completion, ensuring everything is done correctly. Of course, another big part of his role is to keep things moving at a solid pace so that a project is finished on time for clients. It has been smooth sailing for Tony so far, with no obstacles he has been unable to overcome.

Tony enjoys playing golf outside of work and is a big family man. He spends most of his time with his wife and playing with his two kids. He said his family is what inspires him the most.

Tony’s a simple man and lives by one philosophy: “One banana at a time.”

Internships At Vedda

February 2022 marked a new era for Vedda Printing as we picked up a new prowess: DTG, aka Direct-To-Garment printing. Although this type of printing is simple to learn, it still requires much thought, care, and problem-solving. The new DTG department offers an opportunity to discover a unique artistry while refining other skills applicable across the board, making it an excellent place for interns. As a result, Vedda Printing adopted a new internship program that following summer.

Matthew, a graphic design major at Baldwin Wallace, was the first to venture into Vedda Printing’s internship program. “I was looking for work where I could put my graphic design skills to use. One of my professors at Baldwin Wallace, Erica Lull, recommended a job opportunity at Vedda Printing, so I took a gamble and applied for an internship there. At first, there wasn’t much design work for me to do. My job mostly consisted of Direct-To-Garment printing, making online stores for clients, and mailing. As I got more help with the apparel printing, I was given more opportunities to use my graphic design skills in editing files to be print-ready and officially set up a Graphic Design division from the ground up. This would entail new services which we offer to clients who want designs from scratch. I hope to finalize this division before the end of my internship,” Matthew said.

The internship program at Vedda Printing gives interns access to the new DTG department. There are countless opportunities to learn/improve valuable skills, gain exposure to a professional workplace, and make long-lasting connections.

In recent months, Vedda Printing has upgraded our services, offering DTF or Direct-To-Film in addition to DTG. More information about the two types will be provided in future blogs, so stay posted!

Aside from DTG or DTF printing, interns can gain experience in website work, mailing, content creation, and content marketing. Thanks to the internship program, a graphic design department at Vedda is in the works.

Vedda Printing officially began in 1956, but Phil Vedda Sr. discovered his passion for printing at the tender age of 12

Printing is truly in the Vedda family’s DNA. Vedda Printing officially began in 1956, but Phil Vedda Sr. discovered his passion for printing at the tender age of 12, a time when other boys were only interested in sports and hanging out with friends.

Phil Vedda Sr.The son of first generation immigrants from Sicily, his parents ran a fruit and vegetable stand. Phil took a printing class in the 7th grade, using all letter press equipment. After making business cards for his parents’ business, he knew printing was what he was meant to do…even though he spelled "vegetable" wrong! (Never underestimate the power of a proofreader!) In high school, he even printed his own diploma!

In Vedda Printing’s early years, Phil endured exceptionally long days, working full-time for other printers, while growing his business on the side. After seven years, he was finally ready to make Vedda Printing his full time job.

It truly became a family business, with his wife Grace keeping the books, proofreading and running the office. All five of Phil’s children have worked for the business, and three of them are still with the company to this day. Phil said it was a godsend having his children with him to grow the business, as they share his vision and drive for taking the business to the next level. The printing gene has been passed down to the third generation now, as two of Phil's grandsons, both named Phil, of course, are now helping lead the company.

Extending the network, Don, Phil Sr.’s close friend and neighbor who became like family, was with Vedda Printing for more than 35 years; his sons are now carrying on the tradition. Growing well beyond just family, Vedda now has more than 37 employees and counting.

As the business grew, the buildings did not, so Vedda has been in several west side Cleveland locations over the years, finally landing on our current location at 12000 Berea Road in Cleveland.
